methane series,
a homologous series of saturated, open-chain (aliphatic) hydrocarbons, with the group formula CnH2n + 2 (n standing for the number of carbon atoms in the molecule); alkanes. The methane series includes a larger number of known compounds than any other chain series, many of which, as methane, ethane, butane, and propane, are commercially important.
